Document language

WCAG 3.1.1 Language of Page · AAUTOMATIC

What the rule requires

A document must declare its language so screen readers pick the right pronunciation rules. Without the declaration, English text can be spoken with the wrong phonetics — technically read, practically useless.

How Proof clears it

  1. Checks the declarations in both the document catalog and XMP metadata.

  2. Detects the language from content and writes the declaration when it’s absent — so screen readers pronounce correctly.

What to expect

Verify non-English detections. And passages in a second language are a separate check — language of parts (3.1.2) — surfaced with locations and attested by a human, because span-level language is a content decision.
