Words saved as pictures

Images of text. When words are saved as a picture, a reader can't enlarge them cleanly, or recolor them to read them. WCAG 1.4.5, images of text, asks for real text wherever real text could look the same. This lane brings you every picture Proof found with words in it, one document after another. Not every one fails. A logo is fine, because its look is the point. So is a sign that's only part of a photo. A heading or a paragraph saved as a picture is not fine. Those words should have been typed.

Walking the regions

Each region is outlined on its page. Before you decide, read the line under the page. If real text sits over the picture, its words are already text, and it passes. Here, the words are pixels. But this is the Maple Ridge logo, so choose Not an image of text. Proof moves to the next one. This trail photo has the park's sign in it. That's part of the scene. On the last region, the button reads Not an image of text, attest. That press records the whole document, in your name. This is the document's only check left, so this press also makes it Compliant. You can still undo it for eight seconds.

When a picture fails

This board meeting notice is a whole paragraph saved as a picture. That fails. Choose Flag issue, or press X. Proof starts the note with where you are. It also reads the picture's words with OCR, and quotes them in the note. That gives whoever fixes it the exact text to type. Add the reason, for the person who will fix it, and save. A flag is a confirmed violation, in your name. The check now reads Failed, and Enter can't attest here. So move on with the right square bracket key. The notice moves to Flagged as failing, with who flagged it, and why. Flagged by mistake? Only you can take your flag back, with Clear my flag.

What fixes it

Flagging doesn't turn a picture of words into text. The source has to be rebuilt with real text, and brought in as a new version. Then Proof asks again. Rebuilding has its own lesson. To answer this inside one document, see Charts, diagrams and images of text. Now you can tell a logo from a picture of words, clear a document in one walk, and flag the one that fails.
