In this lesson you
- Read each flagged sentence where it sits on the page
- Attested a document whose instructions name what they mean
- Flagged the instruction that relies on position alone, with a suggested rewording in the note
Transcript
Instructions you have to see
Sensory characteristics. A form says, click the green button on the right. Who can follow that? Not a screen reader user, or someone who can't tell green from grey. WCAG 1.3.3, Sensory characteristics, says an instruction must not rely only on shape, size, position or sound. The fix is to name the thing. An instruction that says choose Submit works for everyone. And the cue can stay beside the name. Choose Submit, the green button, also passes. Proof flags sentences that pair an instruction, like click, with one of those cues. Many are fine, so a person reads each one.
Walking the sentences
Each flagged sentence is highlighted on the page, and the list on the left marks its instruction and its cue. This one says press Submit, the green button. It names the button, so choose Not sensory-only, and Proof moves on. The next one says fill in the large box, Project description. It names the box too. On this last sentence the button reads Not sensory-only, attest. That press records the whole document, in your name.
When the cue is all there is
The next document says, to pay online, click the icon on the right. Nothing else says which icon. That relies on position alone. Choose Flag issue. Proof drafts a rewording that names the target, and adds it to the note as a suggestion, marked AI. Read it, and change anything that's wrong. Add why, and save it. The check now fails, under your name, until the sentence is reworded in the source file. Press the right bracket, and the document waits under Flagged as failing. Now you can read every flagged sentence, attest a document whose instructions name what they mean, and flag the one that doesn't.
