In this lesson you
- Stepped through every passage in another language
- Attested a document whose passages are tagged or exempt
- Marked a missing language and applied it, and flagged a passage you can't settle here
Transcript
Why a passage needs its language
Language of parts. What does a screen reader do with a Spanish paragraph in an English document? Unless it's marked as Spanish, it reads it in an English voice, and the listener hears nonsense. That's WCAG 3.1.2, Language of parts. For each passage Proof finds, you decide. Is it tagged, or exempt? Tagged means it's marked with its language. Exempt means it needn't be, like a proper name, or a borrowed word like café.
Walking the passages
Every passage gets an answer. A row named Greek is text in another alphabet. Proof lists it whether or not it's marked. This one is Taverna Olympia, a restaurant. A proper name is exempt, so choose Tagged or exempt. Proof moves on. The next names a sister city, and the last another restaurant. Both are exempt. On the last passage, the button reads All 3 passages tagged or exempt, attest. That press records the whole document, in your name. It was the only check left, so the document is now Compliant.
When a passage isn't marked
The next document asks a question instead. Is this passage in Spanish? Proof asks that only about a paragraph that isn't marked as Spanish. So a yes means it fails, until you mark it. It is Spanish, so choose Mark as Spanish. The picker opens with Spanish already chosen, so confirm it. That only stages the mark, with your other answers. Nothing is written to the file yet. Once every passage is answered, choose Apply 1 language mark. Proof writes the language into the file as a new version, and checks the document again. The notice now passes, so it leaves the lane. Nothing is left on it to attest, and Proof moves to the next document.
The other decisions
That is the choir concert, with one passage in Cyrillic, a song title. Tagged or exempt, attest, is for a passage that needs no change: it already carries the right language, or it's an exempt name. Mark language sets one here, as you just saw. Flag issue is for what you can't settle here. Say the title's language has to be settled in the source file. Choose Flag issue, add why to the note, and save it. The check now fails, under your name, until the source file is fixed. The document waits under Flagged as failing. Now you can step through every passage, mark a language that is missing, and flag what you can't settle here.
