Text that looks right and reads wrong

Readable text. Some PDFs look perfect, and still read as nonsense to a screen reader. The font underneath doesn't say which letters its shapes are. So a screen reader is handed placeholder symbols instead of words. That's garbled text. This lane asks one question of each document. Does the garble matter? Each amber box marks a line with garbled words. Under the page, Screen reader hears shows what a listener gets. Step through the lines with the arrow keys, and ask what those words carry.

Your two answers

Then you answer one of two ways. Not material says the garble is still there, and you judged it harmless. A symbol in a page number, say. Material, needs a fix, says the words matter. It's a flag, so it fails the check in your name, with a note. The X key opens it too. In other lanes, Enter presses the main button. Here it never answers for you. Both buttons carry equal weight on purpose, so neither looks like the default. In this program guide, only the page numbers are garbled. A listener loses nothing. So choose Not material, attest.

Repairing it here

In this water report, a whole sentence is garbled. That matters. But before you flag it, see if you can repair it. A dashed outline marks the tag holding the garbled words. Select it. Remove unreadable deletes the placeholder symbols. Check that what's left matches the page, then choose Stage and close. A staged repair waits until you apply it. Enter now presses Apply 1 repair, because a repair isn't a judgment. Every staged repair goes into one new version, and Proof checks it again. When every line reads, the check passes with no claim at all. Leave with repairs staged, and Proof asks first.

Fixed at the source

Sometimes the real fix is in the original file, exported again with its fonts intact. There's no button here for that, on purpose. Bring the fixed file in as a new version. Proof checks it fresh, and if the words read, the check passes on its own. When a document needs rebuilding shows how.

What it means for the certificate

On the certificate, Not material reads as a person's review. The unreadable text was assessed, and it doesn't block certification. A repair, here or at the source, needs no claim. The check simply passes. Now you can hear what a screen reader hears, repair the words that matter, and record the answer that's true.
